Super blue blood moon explained plus best photos

After 152 years, a rare phenomenon happened on the 31st of January 2018. This was the day when a supermoon, blue moon, blood moon, and an eclipse coincided all at the same time. The last time that it occurred was on 1866 that made the recent event highly anticipated. It would happen rarely and as the saying goes, “once in a blue moon.”

Psst.ph  explains the terms involved to you in simple words.

What is a supermoon?

According to National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), supemoon is a lunar phenomenon when the moon is very close to Earth and its orbit, known as perigee, making it look humongous and 14% brighter in the sky. 12 to 13 full moons occur each year and only three to four on average can achieve that status.

What is a blue moon?

The second full moon of the month is called a blue moon. January 2018 had two full moons already.

What is a blood moon?

According to the dictionary, blood moon is the phenomenon whereby the moon in total eclipse appears reddish in color as it is illuminated by sunlight filtered and refracted by the earth’s atmosphere.

What is a total lunar eclipse?

A total lunar eclipse happens when the earth moves between the sun and the moon, preventing sunlight from reaching the moon.

Philippines was so blessed to witness this rare lunar display. It was noted that the Middle East, United States, other Asian countries, Russia, and Australia were also able to see it. It was indeed one of the most magnificent and spectacular displays of the heavens in the past years that’s why Psst.ph would like to share with you its curated one of a kind photos posted on Instagram that were captured by individuals from all over the world.
