Shell Access to Energy and Liter of Light join hands

The initiative falls under Shell’s Access to Energy (A2E) campaign.  The program promotes the value of sustainable energy by establishing alternative sources particularly in rural communities that have no immediate prospect of being connected to any electricity grid.

Liter of Light is a global movement that provides affordable and sustainable solar power.  It is founded by social entrepreneur Illac Ancellotti-Diaz.  It has always been the group’s goal to lift up the country from poverty through sustainable solar power. Silvana Ancellotti-Diaz, treasurer and mother of Diaz, stated that “if a family can save on electricity, they have more money to buy food, send children to school, and do more activities after sundown.

The A2E campaign and partnership with Liter of Light are reflective of Shell’s commitment to constantly help communities and strive to make a positive difference.  Through the initiative, Shell also aims to be referred to as the country’s constant partner in nation-building.   Add to that, the partnership pushes to encourage communities and customers to produce less waste and carbon emissions through the donation of PET bottles.  These PET bottle will be converted into sources of light.

PET bottles as solar-powered light bulbs

The project has two phases.  The first phase will transform an initial 60 Shell retail stations all over Metro Manila into recycling stations.  The identified stations are where people will donate PET bottles.  These bottles, in turn, will be made into solar-powered light bulbs for homes. For Liter of Light’s part, their technical expertise will be put to good use as they create solar batteries to fuel the bulbs.

Shell Fuel Brand Manager Mark Malabanan emphasized the importance of how many bottles they would collect.  He said in a statement that “the more donation we get, the more lights we can create for families.”

The second phase of the partnership will take effect in January 2018.  Shell will allot a certain day wherein every liter of fuel bought by customers in select retail stations will have an equivalent amount of monetary donation to be accumulated and given to Liter of Light.

Shell’s commitment to nation-building

Improving access to energy is part of how Shell drives nation-building. This is apart from the company’s innovative energy solutions that broaden the energy mix in the country, uphold energy efficiency, smarter fuels and lubricants technology, cleaner-burning natural gas,  and sustainable mobility.
