Paul Jansen Ong is now part of the story

Paul Jansen Ong, or more known as Jansen Aguilar, is one of the skilled actors in the theatre industry. Being a theatre enthusiast myself, I am certain Director Ariel Franciso of Gantimpala Theater Foundation made the right decision when he chose Jansen as one of the actors in Kanser the Updated 2016. I was not surprise that many were astonished by Jansen’s performance and would love to see him perform the second time around.

In this PsstPh Part of the Story Series, Paul Jansen Ong talks to us about his theater career and his experience in the industry.

Tell me something about yourself that people don’t know:
I’m the type of guy who really loves food, traveling and gets teary-eyed every time I see old people passing by eating their sandwich alone, They remind me of my loved ones from the past… And boy I do love chicken! they’re my favorite! I mean who doesn’t? haha..

What is your current state of mind before we continue with the interview?
I’mjust enjoying the FAQ. thank you for this sir Axl!

When did you first know you wanted to become an stage actor?
When I was a kid, my curiosity pulled me closer into theater unlike other schools they used to go watch plays to educate students more often, well in my case they don”t prioritize it. So I got curious about it and what is it like to perform on stage with the characters? But I didn’t had a chance because my school focuses more on academics up until now!

What was the first show you ever did? And hows the experience?
My first show is with KANSER Updated 2016 with director Franniel Zamora and it felt like a lot of different emotions! I feel excited and scared at the same time! Sino ba naman hindi kakabahan maging parte ng isang most awaited play, KANSER! In fact, this is my first ever professional play thanks to Director Franniel Zamora for giving me this opportunity! Although I’ve been to PETA summer workshop program last summer.

What has been your favorite role so far?
I have two favorites! The one I portrayed which is Padre Salvi and Crisostomo Ibarra.

Have you ever played someone of the opposite gender? (If not do you want to try it?) What was that like?
Not yet, But if given a chance why not? Actors should be flexible with their craftsmanship! bawal ang choosy dito! haha

What show/shows are you currently working on?
Right now I’m focusing on KANSER Updated 2016

Have you ever forgotten your lines, or a prop, or choreography during a performance? What happened?
Yes! there’s this one time I’m internalizing the character waiting for me next act, now its my turn to show up suddenly I got nervous, my hands were shaking and I forgot my lines so instead I just did an Adlib buti nalang natumpak ko pa doon yung pagka-nervous ko sa scene na yun haha…

What is something that you know now that you wish you knew when you were first starting out as an actor?
How to modulate my voice, since performing in stage has a wide range of audience you should really project all throughout the play even with or without microphone. Don’t rely on it.
Besides acting, what other training have you had (voice, dance, stage combat, etc.)? We had a few sessions of voice lessons during our rehearsals for KANSER updated 2016, and I also went to PETA summer workshop and did some basic activities related to acting and dancing

How do they memorize alot of lines? Of course It’s not easy to memorize tagalog lines deeper than a well haha. Since I am new here I’m still adjusting and all I did was keep on reading the script over and over again until it pierced through my mind. the struggle is real! haha

If you could choose, what three actors would you really want to work with?
I will choose James Dean, Johnny Depp, and Jared Leto! I know this may sound ambitious but they are my Idols! I always love working with great actors! I want to challenge myself

Why do you think theater is important?
I think it’s important because you can grow as a person and you get to practice panctuality and discipline, and It’s on way of good exercise too! haha

Why do you think so many aspiring actors end up giving up on their dream?
Because they focus more on what other people say about them. People talk a lot of bad things when you exceed their expectations, they just want to bring you down! Instead, prove them wrong and show them you can be somebody in the industry but always stay humble, treat people equally just be the better person you are yesterday.

What is something embarrassing or unexpected that happened to you on stage?
So far wala pa naman. I hope not! haha

What are some of the greatest fears you think actors/actress face?
I guess fear of rejecting and not appreciated by the audience. Just like any other actor will do whether Bida, Kontrabida or Crowd actors. they all did there best and the least they wanted is to appreciate there effort.

What do you need in order to become a successful actor?
Determination and guidance from the Lord.

What makes a good stage actor in your opinion?
A good stage actor has the quality to make the audience react to the performance. There is no exact reaction, It depends on the audience itself.

What is the most rewarding part of stage actor?
When you get a round of applause and see the look of satisfaction from the audience, Standing Ovation to be the most!

What are the pros and cons of being a actor? Please be specific.
Pros of being an actor is you grow more inside you understand more about yourself, you become open minded of the possibilities in life. Cons is that you get the least time with your family and loved ones.

What goal are you working towards within your career and when will you know you have reached it?
My goal is to be the best that I can be whether it may be in the field of entertainment or architecture. I know i have reached it when I see myself still looking for space for improvements.

What organizations do you belong to?
I’m part of Gantimpala Theater Foundation and also a member of Junior Philippine Institute of Atchitects Iloilo Chapter.

If you weren’t a stage actor or an artist, what would you want to be? Why?
I want to be an Architect/Traveler, I get to create Architectural infrastracture while travelling around the world appreciating God has given us.

What advice would you give to someone who wanted to do what you do?
Just be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else and prove them that you can be somebody but always stay humble.

How do you see yourself 20 or 30 yrs from now?
I see myself having long beard haha just kidding. I see myself as a successful person,I can never tell my future only God knows. I just know that I am going to be successful because I want to!

What legacy you will leave on?
As an actor, I want to leave a legacy for people to look up to me as someone who is humble enough to reach his goals without stepping on someone.

Any final message? Its time to shine!!
Everbody is been going through alot in life,it isn’t going to be easy and that doesn’t mean you’re going to give up that easily! sometimes people look down on you, they try to pull you down, some wanted to be like you but that’s life. Don’t give up because the sweetest fruit are the ones you need to climb for you to reach it! Set your mind straight and go for that fruit! And when you do always kepp in mind “the higher we are placed, the more humbly we should walk”
