Manila Biennale: Open City 2018 brings back the soul of Intramuros

The first Manila Biennale, an event that is all about bringing back the soul of the city of Intramuros is set from February 2 until March 5, 2018. The theme for this year is Open City 2018 which for the entire month, many gardens, plazas, chambers, and museums of Intramuros are transformed into platforms for art, performance, and expression.

Manila Biennale 2018

Manila Biennale: OPEN CITY 2018, refers to Intramuros as the origin of our capital’s culture. It is a tribute to the walled city’s beginnings as a port for the Galleon Trade, a time when it was opened itself up to the world and welcomed new ideas, products, and people. It focuses on the issues and agendas of artists, art production, and art processes meaning they are artist-curated, artist-run, and artist-centric.

Open City also refers to December 26, 1941, a vulnerable period in World War 2 when Manila was cleared of all military presence; a moment of tension between two colonized periods of our history. This organized non-profit event is possible due to the collaboration between six major art institutions in Manila: Anthology Architecture and Design Festival, The Cultural Center of the Philippines, Design Center of the Philippines, Fringe Festival Manila, Intramuros Administration, and VivaManila.

Why Biennale? Biennale is an Italian word for “biennial” or “every other year”, which means that this event is bound to happen every two years like other huge-scale international exhibitions.
