What to Look for in Your VCO Supplier

Looking for a virgin coconut oil manufacturer that’s perfect for your business or product may seem like a simple affair at the start. After all, shouldn’t your primary concerns be the quality, price, and the speed of delivery? Of course, nothing can be farther from the truth, especially if you want your product and your business to succeed. The following is a list of requirements that you should look for in a reliable virgin coconut oil supplier.

A good standing and reputation among its customers and clientele, as well as in the industry in general.

Choosing a VCO supplier is more or less the same as choosing a business partner, in that their reputation and standing among their clientele will inevitably reflect onto you. As such, it’s your responsibility to ensure that you’re entering into an agreement with a VCO supplier that has a positive reputation in the industry and among customers. You can verify this through a variety of ways, such as looking up their product or company reviews online through search engines or on social media. The latter, in particular, can give you a glimpse into how the public perceives your potential VCO supplier.

Another way is to ask your candidate for valid references, such as a very recent and very significant client. Interview the reference in person so that you can get as much genuine information from them as possible. This will help you form a clearer and more impartial profile about your prospective VCO supplier, and in doing so help in your decision-making process. Some key questions that you need to ask include how long your VCO supplier has been in business, and any verified certifications they may have.

Finally, check to see if they have the proper registrations and paperwork necessary for a business to operate. A VCO supplier should be registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR), their mayor’s office, and most importantly the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of the Philippines. A VCO supplier lacking in any of these requirements should definitely be avoided.

A proven ability to produce the high-quality virgin coconut oil that you need for your products.

Your VCO supplier should not only be able to produce the virgin coconut oil in the quantity that fits your business demand, but also produce it in a consistently high quality as well. To verify this, take the time to visit their production plant and see their manufacturing process for yourself. Check for the following:

  • Raw material quality. Your VCO supplier should be using only the best coconuts for the manufacturing of VCO. As such, the coconuts should be freshly harvested and properly stored for only 48 hours before they’re processed. Any longer and the quality of the coconuts falls off dramatically.
  • Production plant construction quality. Give the exterior and interior of the plant a thorough visual inspection. Does the building itself look and feel sturdy or does it look like it has been hastily built? Do the machinery and technology involved in the manufacturing process look to be in good working condition, with no apparent leaks or rusty components? Finally, does the entire facility appear to be clean and well-sanitized, especially when it comes to the areas where the processing takes place? The answers to these questions can easily separate an ideal VCO supplier from a terrible one.
  • Manufacturing process. Check what process your VCO supplier is using to manufacture their own brand of virgin coconut oil. While there are many existing methods to produce virgin coconut oil, only one method – specifically, the wet press centrifuge extraction method – is capable of producing the highest quality virgin coconut oil. Unlike other methods such as fresh-dry processing, the wet press centrifuge extraction method does not involve intense heat or prolonged periods of fermentation in order to produce the oil. Rather, it involves only mechanical force to extract the coconut milk from freshly-harvested coconut meat. The milk is then spun in high-speed centrifuges in order to quickly extract the oil from it. What results is only the freshest and purest coconut oil, with a clean and transparent appearance that’s also sweet and mild in taste – easily consumable by children and adults alike. Ideally, your VCO supplier should be using this method as their main VCO production process.
  • Production plant location. Where is your VCO supplier’s production plant located? The closer the plant is built to the coconut farm that it takes its supply of coconuts from, the fresher the coconuts will be the moment they’re processed, which then results in higher quality VCO.

A strong sense of corporate social responsibility.

Besides their ability to produce VCO at its highest quality, you should also consider how well your potential supplier is taking care of their employees and those who live near their production plant. Do they ensure that their employees and coconut farmers are compensated adequately for their time and labor? Observe the location and neighborhoods surrounding the plant, perhaps interview the mayor or barangay captain of the area the plant is situated in. Does your VCO supplier take a healthy interest in improving the city or barangay’s facilities, or does it mostly keep its profits and revenue all for itself? A VCO supplier who has a clear and steadfast approach to corporate social responsibility is definitely worth partnering with.

An environmental policy geared towards protecting the environment and sustainability.

Your ideal VCO supplier should also be environmentally-minded, with a strong company policy towards going green as well as promoting sustainability. As a minimum, they should be adhering to strict zero waste disposal practices, as well as using nature-friendly technologies to lessen their carbon footprint. With environmental protection and conservation being a hot button topic everywhere in the world, partnering with an environmentally conscious VCO supplier will help promote your brand and product.

These are the most important requirements that your VCO supplier should have right at the outset. Should you decide to partner up with a supplier with any of these missing, you could be risking your product’s quality as well as your brand’s reputation.
