What is your current state of mind before we continue with the interview? Excited yet nervous. Hello! It’s Axl Guinto in the house! Haha! Thank you so much for this opportunity you have given me to share my life and works in Theatre. So much appreciated!
When did you first know you wanted to become an stage actor? I was in Third year high school then when we had to do a role playing in our Math class. I was the room president so I was assigned to do the story, the script and everything. And at the same time I got the lead role since nobody wants to do it and I, myself direct it too. I enjoyed the process that leads me to fall in love in this craft. Right then I knew, I wanted to be a performer.
What was the first show you ever did? And hows the experience? Well, it was the role playing I was talking about earlier. I’m not sure but as far as I remember the title of the play was “The Legend of the Paradigm”? (Haha, sorry. I was the playwrirght how come I do not remember ) Well, It was really fun and I will never forget the experience because that’s how it started. Plus, that’s when I received my first “Best Actress Award”.
What has been your favorite role so far? Gng Makbet of Rolando Tinio’s “Makbet”, it was the tagalize version of Shakespeare’s “Mcbeth”. I really love this role! The character was really challenging and I work really hard to fit in! It was my dream role and I had the chance to portray it during our Graduation Recital under the direction of Mr. Roeder Camanag. Now I’m hoping to do the role again in the bigger production. Someday.
Have you ever played someone of the opposite gender? (If not do you want to try it?) What was that like? Not yet. But of course I’ll b very happy to try it! It’s gonna be a new exciting experience in my acting career.
Have you ever forgotten your lines, or a prop, or choreography during a performance? What happened? Oh, yes! When you are in that situation DO NOT EVER LET YOUR AUDIENCE KNOW THAT THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG GOING ON ONSTAGE! Well, what I did was to do the best thing I can do to save the scene! Act it out! My goodness! The feels, I can feel it right now as I reminisce those stage flaws. Grrr ..
What is something that you know now that you wish you knew when you were first starting out as an actor? “Acting cannot be thought, it’s adiscipline” – Roeder Camanag. There are lots of principles and theories to know as an actor, too many to mention. If you want to know it come and do some workshop at the Artist Playground. Everything I know now, I owe it to my greatest Theater fairy, Roeder.
Besides acting, what other training have you had (voice, dance, stage combat, etc.)? I did some voice training also under Sir Roeder. I am frustrated singer. I admit. Haha!
How do they memorize a lot of lines?: Personally, I allot times in memorizing my lines. I find no excuses on not having enough time not to memorize it,coz i do it as i wash the dishes, as i fold clothes as i take a bath as i travel neither before i sleep. I know it’ll make you look crazy but, I’m used to it … my family are used to it! hahaha
If you could choose, who are the three actors would you really want to work with? I want to work with Eddie Redmayne!!!!!!!!! Oh, I love him so muccchhhh!!!! Emma Stone and Angelina Jolie Love ém all!
Why do you think theater is important? According to Dr. Kevin Brown an Assistant Professor in the Department of Theatre at the University of Missouri, Columbia. There so many reasons that makes theatre important and of all his explanation I strongly agree that in terms of Education, Theatre is a great way to learn. Going to the theatre teaches us about people, places, and ideas to which we would not otherwise be exposed. Learning in a theatrical setting makes learning fun.
Why do you think so many aspiring actors end up giving up on their dream? Sad to say, I’ve been in this situation where I was quite giving up my acting career and find a stable job instead. Base on my experience I understand why there plenty of actors gave up. First of all the reasons is the “money matters”, for the starters finding money in theatre ain’t easy. But I have learned that in this industry you have to invest first and grind later.
What is something embarrassing or unexpected that happened to you on stage? We are in the middle of ritualistic performance and the skirt that I’m wearing suddenly fell! Audience laugh at me as i continue performing while trying to get my skirt back on track.
What are some of the greatest fears you think actors/actress face? Maybe the fact that there is always better than us? Like there are so many artist in the world, who are younger, has a lot more experience and studied in a private school or in abroad, how are going to make yourself standout? Well, this is being too paranoid. Haha!
What do you need in order to become a successful actor? Work harder and keep learning. And a sincere prayers.
What makes a good stage actor in your opinion? A good stage actor is NOT SELFISH, period.
What is the most rewarding part of stage actor? It’s when you perform and you know that you have transmitted the message of the play to your audience, that lefts a mark in their hearts. Thats the most rewarding part of being a stage actor for me.
What are the pros and cons of being a actor? Please be specific : Personally, I can’t tell you any cons of being an actor. Call me bias, but sorry, because honestly, I’m happy and fulfilled being an actor.
What goal are you working towards within your career and when will you know you have reached it? Somehow I’m looking forward to have a big break on TV/film. As an actress, i want to bring my acting career in a different level. I know I have reach it the moment I get a regular role on TV series, since I started appearing in some GMA teleserye last year by the help of Mr. Ces Aldaba (Thank you Tito!). So, wish me luck!
What organizations do you belong to? Not a member of any organizations yet.
If you weren’t a stage actor or an artist, what would you want to be? Why? An entrepreneur! I always dream of having my own business A fashion clothes or a resto-bar
What advice would you give to someone who wanted to do what you do? If this is what you really want to do, do not hesitate or get bombarded of what other people say about our craft. If you find your heart here, there’s no reason to hold back because wherever your heart brings you there you find your happiness.
How do you see yourself 20 or 30 yrs from now? An ArtRepeneur! I’m gonna push it! I have so much idea in my mind on how am i going to be a business woman and yet an artist Watch out!
What legacy you will leave on?: Hmm .. still working on it. I think I have 10 more years to work on my legacy.
Any final message? Its time to shine!!
Can I make it tagalog na? Haha.
Well I just wanted to say that, I am very grateful to the Lord for giving me this talent and for bringing me to where i am right now. Also I would like to thank everyone who has been there to help me. Specially Sir Roeder Camanag and the Artist Playground Family.
Theatre is my home and I know I belong here. My heart brought me here and here I found my happiness. Personally, being in this craft is really fulfilling since this is what I really want. With Theatre I become somebody I never thought that I’ll be. It gives me an extra ordinary experiences that thought me a lot in my life.
