“She was so popular in high school and look what happened to her. Now she is just a housewife.”
Maybe there was some point in your life when you and a friend were reminiscing the past and all of a sudden, you heard her say that statement. You froze on that moment because you were at the same situation like that classmate you were talking about but the difference was, unlike her, you were a mompreneur while being a hands-on mom and wife.
When you parted ways, you were trying to digest the way your friend blurted that statement out then you realized that she said it innocently without thinking that you were going to feel humiliated or hurt. It was her own opinion and she was entitled to it.
The question is, “How do you define success?”
The definition of success is very personal. It depends on the background, upbringing, priorities, and outlook of an individual. Success for some may mean gaining power, having a high ranking position, working in a company of his dreams, possessing expensive things, owning millions of pesos, living in style, enjoying fame, traveling in different parts of the world, or anything that is equated to tangible things that can be earned through hard work.
For others, success can be measured by having a happy marriage or relationship, rearing children of his own, belonging to a happy family, being able to do volunteer work, being a freelancer, living peacefully on his own, being a housewife, or anything that feeds simple desires can be considered remarkable .
Isn’t it nice that you perceive an individual’s success not based on your own definition but rather based on how that person defines it?
The world will be a harmonious place if you are glad to see others live the life that they choose— to live meaningfully and purposefully just the way they want it to be while you do the same.
“The purpose of life is a life of purpose”. ~ Robert Byrne
Focusing on your life rather than compete with someone is the best way to start 2018. If you find meaning in what you do and you are happy with it, no matter how big or small the goals that you want to achieve, that is the best definition of success and that is what truly matters.
Have a blissful and purposeful 2018!
