Once again, Gilas Pilipinas has proven its undeniable spot being the king in South East Asian basketball by defeating Indonesia, 97-64, during the final game last night for the SEABA Championship 2017 at the Araneta Coliseum.
The 6-0 clean record of Gilas Pilipinas during the whole tournament facilitated their advancement to the FIBA Asia Cup that will be held in Beirut, Lebanon in August and a qualifier for 2019 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers.
Highlighting the victory for the team were Andray Biatche with 21 points and 10 rebounds; Jason Castro’s 14 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists; June Mar Fajardo’s 13 points; and Matthew Wright and Troys Rosario’s 9 points each.
Being a big threat for Gilas having a 36.5 percent shooting clip from the three-point area, Indonesia wasn’t able to jack up its points despite the return of Jamarr Johnson and Arki Wisnu who were expected to beef up the game for Indonesia. It was a smooth play maintaining an over 15-point deficit against the Indonesians all throughout the end of each quarter.
Gilas head coach Chot Reyes believed that the final game was worth the preparation as the Indonesian team came up strong in the line-up of teams. He believes that everyone in his team is doing their part in the tournament making it a solid group as he sealed their SEABA campaign.
The team is now ready to gear up for Fiba Asia Cup where it is bracketed in Group B together with Japan, Chinese-Taipei, and Australia.
