Bernard Joecel Forbes is also known as BJ Tolits during his haydays as a child star in the GMA Network. Who would have thought the BJ Tolits that once animated our homes and gave us a good laugh is now a promising stage actor.  I must say that the future looks bright on his chosen field of profession taking credits from his experiences and dedication to his craft.

In this Psst.Ph Part of the Story Series, Bernard Joecel Forbes talks to us about his theater career and his experience in the industry.

Tell me something about yourself that people don’t know:
I like exotic food.

What is your current state of mind before we continue with the interview?
Nothing just calm and focused haha.

When did you first know you wanted to become an stage actor?
When I was in the TV industry and I’ve worked with some theater actor and I really got impressed with how they act.

What was the first show you ever did?
Bona of PETA..

And hows the experience?
It was great I’ve learned a lot of things and made me love the craft more.

What has been your favorite role so far?
Don Juan of course 😜

Have you ever played someone of the opposite gender?
Nope. But yes I want to try it because I like challenges haha (If not do you want to try it?)

What show/shows are you currently working on?
Ibong Adarna and there’s two more shows that we are still working on.

Have you ever forgotten your lines, or a prop, or choreography during a performance?
Yes well we are just human and its normal for us to forget something or what.

What happened?
I just do some adlibs don’t show the audience that there is something wrong and just go on with the show.

What is something that you know now that you wish you knew when you were first starting out as an actor?
Act with a heart do not be like a robot that is programmed and make every performance fresh.

Besides acting, what other training have you had (voice, dance, stage combat, etc.)?
I don’t really went on a workshop but I do some research more of a self thought.

How do they memorize alot of lines?
I don’t really memorize it line by line I just get the thought familiarize my self with the sequencing and be that character and the lines will follow.

If you could choose, who are the three actors would you really want to work with?
If on stage i want to try working with JM De Guzman, Nico Manalo and Nyoy Volante

Why do you think theater is important?
For me that what makes me happy that is my passion and the craft that I love and also it helps us inspire more people and also to help the audience to use their imagination and learn a lot of things.

Why do you think so many aspiring actors end up giving up on their dream?
Frustrations and because of what other says.

What is something embarrassing or unexpected that happened to you on stage?
I fell on the 6 ft platform hahaha but good thing I just got a small scratch.

What are some of the greatest fears you think actors/actress face?
Being criticized by actors that we look up to.

What do you need in order to become a successful actor?
You have to learn everyday don’t be contented of what you can do today and improve everyday.

What makes a good stage actor in your opinion?
A thinking actor and an actor that acts with their heart.

What is the most rewarding part of stage actor?
Seeing that our audience appreciates our craft and seeing that we have been a way for them to be inspired or to realize something through our stories.

What are the pros and cons of being a actor? Please be specific.
Pros: Being looked up to, having a lot of experience that we can use on our life, opportunities to work with great people, having a lot of connections.
Cons: You have to dedicate your time sacrifice some important occasions and do it with all your heart. You have to give your best even if you’re tired, you have to act even if you have some illness or some problems.

What goal are you working towards within your career and when will you know you have reached it?
My goal is just to give my best every performance learn and learn everyday and as long as I’m doing it I’m reaching my goal.

What organizations do you belong to?
Gantimpala Theater Foundation and a youth commission which I am currently the chairman which is Angono Youth Commission.

If you weren’t a stage actor or an artist, what would you want to be? Why?
I might be a programmer or a mechanical engineer. Well I think I can still be one while I am an actor haha.

What advice would you give to someone who wanted to do what you do?
Just pursue your dreams and do not be afraid of failures just keep on going even you got tripped sometimes.

How do you see yourself 20 or 30 yrs from now?
I will still be acting on stage hahaha.

What legacy you will leave on?
Well I want to be known as an actor that made a lot of roles different in a positive way and stay on the industry longer.
