After long hours of rocking the baby to sleep, you put him down, and you quietly tiptoe towards the door. Suddenly, you hear your little one wail.
He is awake again.
Some babies would wake up the minute their body touches the mattress. They will not stop crying unless you put them back in your arms.
Why does the baby wake up when we put him down?
Studies say that it takes at least 20 minutes for a baby to reach a deep sleep. Putting him down too soon will only wake him up. It is prudent to wait a little longer.
But if waiting longer doesn’t seem to help at all, it is most probably because an infant can feel through his skin. He can sense that there is something different. He may feel the missing softness of his mother’s touch or perhaps the smell of his mom’s milk. The baby may even feel less protected in the absence of his mother’s touch. He may also long for his mom’s breathing chest and heat of her body. Simply put, an infant feels alert. He doesn’t want to be abandoned. But slowly, he will soon understand that he is a separate person from his guardian. This happens when he reaches seven to nine months old.
Not until he reaches that age, you need to give to the baby your love, affection, and understanding. Giving such will help him develop a sense of security, confidence even, and love. Even past that age, you still need to give him your love and care.
But if there is a need to really finish something and the baby doesn’t want to be left alone, you may try to –
use a ring sling or baby wrap.
Carrying the baby in a sling frees your hands to do other tasks. Aside from the fact that a ring sling is easy to use, it can be handy, too, for quick trips and errands. You can also breastfeed discreetly while using either a baby wrap or a ring sling. The baby is more likely to sleep too while in a sling close to his mother.
Many mothers swear by the benefits a ring sling or a baby wrap does to them. They can carry their little ones hands-free, do urgent tasks, and still make the infant feel safe and loved. One shop that delivers woven wraps and slings is Shadrach’s Collection. Its baby carriers vary from sophisticated patterns with colorful stripes to the most modest design.
Nothing in life is permanent.
Time will come your baby will pass the stage of needing to be in your arms to feel safe. It will never be too long so might as well enjoy those moments he doesn’t want to be anywhere far from you.
Never think as well that you are getting nothing done. You are cuddling your little one, making him feel safe and protected. You are investing in your child’s development. Research shows that touch is the one of the first senses that develops, making it the “building block in early infancy of communication.”
Cuddling is one of the most important gifts any parent can give their baby. Do not be too selfish not to give it.
