All About SPAM®

Whenever you see or hear the word SPAM®, what is the first thing that comes to your mind? I’m sure it’s the delicious American brand that we Filipinos love. I remember back then, the only time we got to taste this delicious meat in the blue can was when relatives from the United States send us balikbayan boxes.

Did you know that Philippines is among the top 5 countries in terms of quantities sold? We rank number 3. Of course, United States of America is on the top. South Korea got the second spot. Japan is 4th and United Kingdom ranks 5th.

Have you ever wondered how SPAM® got its name?

According to Jaynee Sherman, Senior Brand Manager of SPAM® Brand Hormel Foods International Division of the Hormel Foods Corporation, popular belief is that the word is an abbreviation of spiced ham. It is a term coined by brother of a company executive in 1937 and he was paid $100 as a prize.

How do you like your SPAM®?

The most common way that people around the world eat SPAM® is by making a sandwich, straight out of the can or pan fried. Filipinos love theirs with fried rice and egg. But there’s more you can do with this canned meat than just being a breakfast food. Chef Sharwin Tee, Chef/Host of Lifestyle Network’s Curiosity Got the Chef, has created dishes close to the Filipinos hearts. These are SPAM® Tokwa’t Baboy, Sisig, and  Puto.

SPAM® Cares

SPAM® believes in giving back to the community. The brand has helped those in need for decades. In 2009, Hormel Foods Corporation has donated thousand cans through the Philippine National Red Cross for the victims of Typhoon Ondoy.

The brand is now partnering with Children’s Hour. During the SPAM® Can! event held at the Glorietta Activity Center in Makati last March 20, 2017, people were encouraged to participate at the Make-a-Hero Spamwich Booth. For only P100, you can create your own sandwich. All proceeds were doubled and donated to Children’s Hour foundation.

The brand recognizes the Filipinos love for music. There’s no better way to show appreciation than to form the ALL4SPAM boyband. It is a 4-member group of really good looking heartthrobs singing and dancing their way to the hearts of the Filipino fans.

There are 14 varieties of SPAM® available in the Philippines. These are Classic, Lite, Less Sodium, Bacon, Oven Roasted Turkey, Hickory Smoke, Hot & Spicy, Jalapeno, Teriyaki, Black Pepper, Chorizo, Tocino, Garlic, and With Cheese. The first three mentioned are the most popularly bought by Filipinos.
