5 Most Anticipated Portions of Miss Universe Pageant

Miss Universe 2016 / 2017 season is just a few weeks away and everyone is abuzz about the upcoming arrival of the candidates in the Philippines . The pageant attracts almost a billion viewers from every parts of the world.  Here are the 5 most anticipated portion of the upcoming pageant.

Swimsuit Competition 

Miss Universe pageant was founded in 1952 by the California-based clothing company Pacific Knitting Mills. The company was the sponsor of the  Miss America pageant until 1951, when the winner, Yolande Betbeze, refused to pose for publicity pictures wearing one of their swimsuits. So in 1952 Pacific Knitting Mills organised the Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants, co-sponsoring them for decades until the middle part of the 1990’s.

Companies like Catalina, Oscar dela Renta, Yamamay were among long list of sponsors. There is also the much waited glamour shots by well-known photographers , modelling agencies and talent scouts who are always on a constant look-out for new talents.

The same story of the rival Miss World pageant which started as a bikini contest which attracted millions of viewers from all around the world. People sometimes would pit these two pageants on who’s candidates are better with their swimsuits. However in recent years,  Miss World focuses more on beauty with a purpose and other fast track events .

People from all walks of life are updated via photos , magazines, online news, internet ,television .Swimsuit portion are some sort of fashion setting for the summer collection of the companies which sponsors the ladies. This is aside from their admirable bodies to die for.

National Costumes 

National Costume competition is another aspect which pageant aficionados , missosologists and nationalist fervor were displayed during the competition . The competition started in 1962 with Miss England winning the award . Some countries like from Central and South America are known for their large headdresses and flamboyant costumes .

Asian countries like Thailand , India, Japan and South Korea had also won several  ” best in national costume ” award wearing their traditional dress.

In 1992 pageant,  Miss Pamela Zarza of Paraguay have worn one of the biggest national costume in Miss Universe history , The costume was so big and heavy that the opening number had to be adjusted around her. In 1993 , Miss Norway won the “Best in National Costume ” award with a simple traditional red dress handed down for several generations. Miss Thailand- 2005 Chananporn Rosjan  costume was inspired by the golden age of the Kingdom of Ayuttaya (1351 to 1767) and its lost treasures. Using real gold ornaments weighting several kilos .

One such instance was the 2014 Miss Universe pageant when Miss Philippines Mary Jean Lastimosa national costume created by Colombian designer Alfredo Barraza created an uproar because it resembles a cake or icing on a biscuit.

Evening Gowns

Evening gowns are always part of Miss Universe pageant since its inception.  Wearing beautiful gowns are a big pride to countries like Colombia , Venezuela , Puerto Rico , Brazil , United States which assign-custom made dresses for their candidates .

Fashion icons , gurus and big named companies like Versace , Gucci , Halston , Sherri Hill  , Oscar dela Renta among others have dress-up some of the candidates.  The beautiful gowns must be carried- well during the competition . Hence, different kinds of catwalk or pasarela walk were developed by different countries.

Among the much awaited catwalk styles are from Colombia , Venezuela , USA , Russia , Ukraine , Spain , while  Asian countries like the India ,Thailand and Philippines are also much anticipated .

Catwalk names were created by pageant fans like twirling , pilapil walk , cobra walk , tsunami walk among others. Winning gowns are imitated by budding fashion designers or by fans thereby creating another lucrative market for gowns and other merchandises .

Opening and musical numbers with world class performers are also much waited portion in every Miss Universe pageant . From large production number , high tech equipment and backdrop serves as gauge for local and international pageants.

Question and Answer Portion

Who would forget the winning questions to the winners of the pageant like From: Niger Barker. Question: do you think speaking English should be pre-requisite? Why or why not?

Janine Tugonon–  Answer: for me being Miss universe is not just about knowing how to speak a specific language, its being able to influence and inspire other people, so… (people cheer). So
What ever language you have as long as your heart is deserve and your have a strong
Mind to show to.. To show to people, then you can be miss universe. Thank you.

Miss Universe 1969 -Question: In the next day or so, a man will land on the moon. If a man from the moon landed in your hometown, what would you do to entertain him?

Gloria Diaz–  Answer: “Oh, just the same things I do. I think if he has been on the moon for so long, I think when he comes over he wants to change, I guess. ”

Miss Universe 2000 Final Question: Right now there is a protest going on right outside here calling the Miss Universe Pageant disrespectful of women. Convince them they are wrong.

Lara Dutta – Answer: ” I think pageants like the Miss Universe pageant gives us young women a platform to foray in the fields that we want to and forge ahead, be it entrepreneurship, be it the armed force, be it politics. It gives us a platform to voice our choices and opinions, and makes us strong, independent that we are today. ”

Miss Universe 1994 Final Question: What is the essence of being a woman?

Sushmita Sen– Answer: “Just being a woman is God’s gift that all of us must appreciate. The origin of a child is a mother, and is a woman. She shows a man what sharing, caring and loving is all about. That is the essence of a woman. ”

Miss Universe 1999 Final Question: “If miss universe would become pregnant during her reign, could she be allowed to continue as Miss Universe? ”

Mpule Kwelagobe  -Answer: “Personally I think miss universe is a symbol of a woman in prone to celibacy her femininity. And I believe that… (Applause) Thank you… And I believe that if she got pregnant, you are not supposed to end the title. But, as a woman she should celibate her femininity. Thank you”
